Moving Arts Española and Teatro Paraguas are pleased to present a staged reading in Spanish of Federico Garcia Lorca's last play La Casa de Bernarda Alba, directed by Mar Cuevas and starring Lucia Alexandre as the domineering matriarch Bernarda Alba.
Upon her second husband's death, domineering matriarch Bernarda Alba imposes an eight-year mourning period on her household in accordance with her family tradition. Bernarda has five daughters, aged between 20 and 39, whom she has rigidly controlled and prohibited from any form of relationship.
Angustias, the only daughter from Bernarda's first marriage, has a dowry and has attracted the attention of Pepe el Romano. The other daughters have no dowries and no prospects. Tensions mount in the household, leading to tragic consequences.
Federico Garcia Lorca finished the play in July 1936, two months before his assassination.
The play was recently presented at Teatro Paraguas in Santa Fe to enthusiastic audiences who appreciated hearing the play in its original poetic language. The performance at Moving Arts Española is on Sunday, April 6, 2025. A suggested donation of $10 at the door is most welcome. Moving Arts Española is located at 68 Eagle Drive, Ohkay Owingeh.
