A Collection of Pursuits
Carlos Canul
November 5 – November 22, 2024
Reception: November 8, 5-7pm

Strata Gallery presents A Collection of Pursuits; the work of Established Member, Texas-based artist Carlos Canul. The exhibition opens November 5th, with a special reception on November 8 from 5-7pm.

Carlos Canul’s paintings are based in landscapes, Meso-American and world mythologies, spiritual realms, and figuration are all major themes in his paintings and drawings. The use of darkness and light, stark lines and blurred imagery combine to invite the viewer into a world of questions both personal and communal.

Carlos Canul stated, “It’s great to be involved with Strata Gallery and the Santa Fe Community. Through the engaging dialogue of paint and all its physical properties, my art plumbs physical and spiritual realms, influences of Meso-American mythologies and traditions, the collision of abstraction and representational forces, all the while holding close painting as a tactile poetic adventure.”

Canul’s artwork has been shown in solo, curated and juried exhibitions in the United States and Europe.

Strata Gallery is open from 11 am to 5 pm Tuesday – Saturday. For more information about Strata Gallery, the current exhibit, and the future schedule of events, please visit the Strata Gallery website and Instagram.

Alex Eckman-Lawn: Membrane

Alex Eckman-Lawn: Membrane

Alex Eckman-Lawn is a Philadelphia-born artist who received his BFA in Illustration from the University of the Arts. His work has appeared in comic books, on album covers, book covers, music videos, T-shirts, and gig posters.

In addition, he spends his time creating multi-layered, hand-cut paper collages, using everything from his original digital paintings to imagery from old medical texts. Each layer is spaced, creating a sense of depth that draws you into the image.

These works have most recently been on display at SCOPE Miami Beach, Art on Paper NY, Paradigm Gallery + Studio, Arch Enemy Arts, Mortal Machine Gallery, Outré Gallery, StolenSpace Gallery, Copro Gallery, Gallery 1988, Cotton Candy Machine, and Corey Helford Gallery, and have been featured in publications such as Hi-Fructose, Juxtapoz Magazine, and The Observer.

My work explores the fear and mystery associated with my body’s inner process. I am my body’s captive, unable to see what betrayals lurk under the surface. I search for safety in my work, for comfortable spaces, security inside myself, and for control.

I dissect my paper sculptures, sometimes violently cutting away at them, burrowing into the body to create caverns and uncovering new spaces. The result can be harrowing, but at times comforting as well.

In cutting through the layers of paper, I am given the opportunity to play both surgeon and architect, for once in complete control over what lies inside

Eden Prairie, 1971
Nov
22
to Dec 1

Eden Prairie, 1971

The New Mexico Actors Lab is now offering a Fall Season Flex-pass for $120 that provides four admissions for any combination of four powerful and provocative plays by award-winning playwrights: Carolyn Gage’s Georgia and the Butch (August 9-11, 15-18), Lanford Wilson’s Burn This (September 4-8, 12-15, 19-22), Will Arbery’s Heroes of the Fourth Turning (October 9-13, 17-20, 24-27) and Eden Prairie, 1971 by Mat Smart (November 13-17, 21-24, 28- December 1). Flex-pass holders can choose dates at their convenience.  Without the Flex-pass, individual tickets are $35, with discounted tickets (see website for details) and limited-seating preview performances costing $15.

All performances will be held at NMAL’s permanent home, the Lab Theater, located at 1213 Parkway Drive in Santa Fe – one block from Meow Wolf. Flex-passes and individual tickets are now on sale at the NMAL website, www.nmactorslab.com or at www.tix.com/ticket-sales/NMActorsLab/6585

The fall season opens with the world premiere of Carolyn Gage’s Georgia and the Butch, directed by Robert Benedetti as a staged reading.  This dramatic adaptation uses excerpts from the letters between Maria Chabot (Mary Beth Lindsey), a young, gender-non-conforming lesbian and the renowned artist Georgia O'Keeffe (Kat Sawyer), with additional narration by their mutual friend, Mary Wheelwright (Suzanne Lederer). Georgia and the Butch will also tour to the Taos Art Center on Thursday, August 29, at 7 p.m., and then to the Las Cruces Community Theater on Saturday, August 31, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Lanford Wilson’s explosive drama, Burn This, explores the spiritual and emotional yearnings of Anna, a dancer in NYC, and her unexpected love affair with Pale, an edgy restaurateur. Their determined struggle toward emotional honesty and liberation exemplifies the strength, humor, and complexity of all Lanford Wilson's work and confirms his standing as one of America's greatest playwrights. Nicholas Ballas will direct Megan Bode, Alexander Lane, and Garrick Sigl.

Zoe Lesser returns to New Mexico Actors Lab to direct Pulitzer Prize finalist Heroes of the Fourth Turning by Will Arbery, a scrupulously hewn drama centering on four alumni of a conservative Catholic college who confront themselves and each other, clashing over theology, politics, and personal responsibility.  It’s an in-depth exploration into the hearts and minds of Christian Conservativism and a timely lead-in to the election. The production features Joey Beth Gilbert, Riley Samuel Merritt, Emily Rankin, and Hania Stocker.

The season closes with Mat Smart’s Eden Prairie, 1971, directed by Nicholas Ballas. On the same night Apollo 15 makes its lunar landing, draft-dodger Pete (Koppany Pusztai) steals home to Eden Prairie after a 300-mile trek from Canada risking arrest to deliver an important message to his childhood friend, Rachel (Chloe Carson). Both are caught between duty to the ones they love and their own futures. In a moment of national tension that mirrors our own, Pete must defend his choices and grapple with the sacrifices he has made. This gentle drama, which also features Barbara Hatch, questions our notions of bravery and responsibility.

JJ and the Hooligans Play Cowgirl

“The great thing about rock & roll is that someone like me can be a star.

- Elton John

The five members of JJ & the Hooligans combine classic dance band tunes with reimagined surprises that make their shows fun, high-energy, and irresistibly danceable.

Jay Heneghan (Lead Vocals) is a classically-trained pianist that commits to being the person in the room having the most fun at every show. Don't make her pick her favorite genre — she loves them all.

Tom Rheam’s (Keys, Trumpet) Dad played trumpet and his Mom piano. Tom plays both, often at the same time. He left college to go on the road with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra and went on to play with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Buddy Rich, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Four Seasons, Frank Sinatra, the Temptations, Smokey Robinson, Leo Maes… you get the picture.  He’s legit.

Pete White (Lead Guitar) grew up in Santa Fe and has been singing and playing guitar in different groups for more than 20 years. He has played with Santa Fe’s Controlled Burn since 2000,  and is active in Santa Fe's thriving jam scene. He likes his food hot, and feels the same way about music.

Ben Baur (Percussion) grew up playing drums in Boulder, San Diego, Berkeley, San Francisco, Albuquerque and, for the last 18 years, in Santa Fe. He is still growing up and still playing percussion.

Juan Aniceto (Bass) has been playing the bass for almost 20 years. Originally from Peru, he studied Music Education in Southern California and has been teaching Beginning Strings for the past 5 years for Santa Fe Public Schools. His hair is often referred to as “the 6th Hooligan”.

DeVault

DeVault

Sage DeVault, better known by his stylized surname DEVAULT, is an American electronic musician.

Devault’s journey as a young musician is one worth noting. After official redos for artists such as Rihanna, 6LACK, 070 Shake, DJ Snake, and Sabrina Claudio under his belt, Devault collaborated with the likes of Bipolar Sunshine, Matt Maeson, and Porches on his Debut Electronic EP ‘Stay’.

Following his debut, Devault went onto release a string of dark industrial tapes, most notably ‘Diamond’ featuring the anthemic ‘Heaven’s Gates’ with Izzy Camina.

In 2022, Devault released the forward thinking ‘I Will’ and broke out in the touring scene in 2023, selling out his headline shows in LA and New York, along with performing at Coachella, Electric Forest, and HARD Summer (to name a few).

2023 also was a year of collaboration for Devault, releasing ‘Revelations’ & ‘Take My Soul’ with ZHU and ‘Apart of Me’ with OTR.

Taking inspiration from the early new wave talent of Depeche Mode and the notorious Daft Punk, Devault is bridging the gap between a nostalgic and original sound.

2024 now calls for his ‘Sensation’ Headline Tour across the country and accompanying project.

She has achieved recognition for her work, and her most recent awards include: In These Mountains Appalachian Folklife Apprenticeship Grant, North Carolina Arts Council (2024-25); Artist Book Production Grant, Women’s Studio Workshop, Rosendale, New York (2024); Artist Fellowship, Kala Arts Institute, Berkeley, California (2023-24); Emerging Traditional Artist Grant, South Arts, Atlanta, Georgia (2023); and Juror’s Choice Award, Focus on Book Arts, Forest Grove, Oregon (2021)

According to Tafoya, “My Hands Are Tied… is reminiscent of my personal connection to basketry in Cherokee and Santa Clara Pueblo. In each of my tribal communities, I have learned the intricacies of basketmaking because it provides a tie to the land and people. My paper-weavings are an approach to basketry from a printmaking perspective.”

The opening reception will be on Friday, October 25 at 5pm, and the exhibition will close on February 21, 2025. For more information contact Daniel McCoy at 505-455-3533 or Rufina Abeita at 505-455-4561.

Helen Gillet at La Reina

Helen Gillet at La Reina

Helen Gillet is a musician, composer, cellist, singer (Belgian French & English), improviser and looping artist. Her prolific career has won her awards of Offbeat Best of the Beat, Gambit Big Easy Awards, featured artist at the New Orleans Jazz Museum and has been nominated three times, most recently in 2023, as a rising star in Downbeat Magazine's Critics Poll. She has played, recorded with many musicians over the past 20 years, including members of the Sun Ra Arkestra, AACM (Chicago), ICP (Holland), Members of Morphine, Kidd Jordan, Marianne Faithful, Cassandra Wilson, Delfeayo and Jason Marsalis, Steve Earle, Iron & Wine (North America Tour 2018), Zachary Richard, opened up as a solo artist for Les Claypool at the Orpheum Theatre in New Orleans in 2003 and Jeff Tweedy at Lincoln Center in 2019. She has performed at a variety of festivals and venues worldwide including the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Dark MOFO Festival in Tasmania, Darwin World Music Festival, New Orleans Jazz Festival, New Direction Cello Society Festival at Berkeley College of Music, Kennedy Center and at The Big Ears Music Festival in 2024 and many more.

Helen Gillet is a singer-songwriter and surrealist-archeologist exploring synthesized sounds, texture, and rhythm using an acoustic cello. For someone with her varied background, New Orleans, with its mix of cultures and musics, seemed like a natural place to call home.

Born in Belgium, and raised in Singapore from the ages of 2 to 11, Helen Gillet was routinely shuttled between the homelands of her Belgian father and American mother planting the notion that a healthy ecosystem in life and art is one of immense variety. Over the years, working in New Orleans with musicians of all stripes, from avant-garde jazz and classical to pop and funk, Gillet has developed a singular polyglot style. The core of her work is solo performance with live looping, layering cello parts and vocal lines. Rhythmic figures emerge with bowed or plucked ostinatos or a variety of rubbing and slapping on the body of the cello, then enhanced with melodies played or sung in her haunting alto. Her mixed musical vocabulary is commensurate with her disparate travels — French chanson of the 1940s, Belgian folk tunes sung in Walloon, a mix of rock and punk from the likes of PJ Harvey and X-Ray Spex, and her own affecting originals, like audience favorite “Julien,” sung in a mix of French and English.

Gillet’s solo performance is known for its enigmatic quality as she fabricates each song with innovative use of the cello and true mastery of live looping technology.

Presented by our friends at Rambler Sparkling Water!

Joe West Plays La Reina

Joe West Plays La Reina

As well as being one of Santa Fe, New Mexico's most beloved songwriters, JOE WEST is also a local impresario, producing theatrical events around his hometown of Santa Fe and throughout the state of New Mexico.

But it is his music that has found a greater audience around the globe.

Quirky, offbeat and melodic, his award-winning “theatrical folk music” is a singular mix of country and rock, which he has been recording and releasing on cassettes, CDs and vinyl records since the mid eighties. He has toured extensively throughout the States and Europe, opening and sharing the stage with the likes of Peter Rowan, The Violent Femmes, Arlo and Sara Lee Guthrie, Mojo Nixon and James McMurtry.

Over the last few years Joe has created a rock opera, produced music for film and television, originated a conceptual radio show, created a film festival and founded a theater company that performs his dark horror-comedies with original live music.

Recently, with support from a grant, Joe has been collaborating with writer Andrew Wice on a full length historical folk/rock musical based on the events surrounding Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County Wars.

Joe lives on his family homestead south of Santa Fe where he spends his free hours gardening and tending to a flock of chickens.

Thanksgiving Dance featuring Cuarenta y Cinco

Cuarenta y Cinco is one of New Mexico’s top groups and has been since its start in 1991. The traditional sound of  New Mexico is what people think of when they hear Cuarenta y Cinco play its up beat music.

Known for its high energy dance music Cuarenta y Cinco has long ruled northern New Mexico and been a favorite of many people throughout the southwest. Cuarenta y Cinco has had much success by the blend of rancheras, cumbias, balses, boleros, country/western, oldies and modern rock they perform.

The ability of the band to go from hard core rancheras to country to rock and back again is what makes them one of New Mexico’s best known variety bands. The ability to get air play from their 8 albums is what has kept them a permanent New Mexico fixture over the years and a powerhouse when it comes to a loyal fan base.

With over 31 plus years under its belt and a willingness to work hard, Cuarenta y Cinco has a proven formula for success and will be a force in New Mexico as long as there is a market for good New Mexico dance music.

Of The Trees with Special Guest

OF THE TREES
Ice cold bass music from the frigid plains of Maine.

BUKU
From the track record of Robert Balotsky's work as Buku, it’s clear that the Pittsburgh native is a well-equipped architect of twisted, layered soundscapes. With a menacing grasp on sound design and music theory, Buku combines deceptively simple and emotive melodies, laden with resounding low-end and intricate drum patterns. With a love of drums rooted early in his childhood, his work reflects his passion for percussion laced with elements only a trained ear could produce.

Establishing himself as an industry favorite since his 2013 debut, Buku has amassed streaming figures in the tens of millions while being championed by a variety of noteworthy curators, including Pete Tong, Diplo, and Zane Lowe to audiences worldwide through BBC Radio 1, Beats 1 Radio, and Spotify editorial playlists. His new label home, Liquid Stranger’s powerhouse bass label WAKAAN, has hosted the producer’s most recent releases (2020’s ‘What You See’ EP and 2021’s ‘Scorched Earth’ EP) notably characterized by their elements of mutated sound design, breakneck transitions, and heavy hitting patchwork synths. Rounding out what has already been an impressive release catalog across dance music’s most prominent labels, Buku has received placements across major media platforms and video game developers such as: ESPN, GoPro, EA Sports’ Madden series, Ubisoft and Capcom.

DMVU
"A Sleeping Scene" is available now on all platforms via Memory Palace.

MINDSET
Diving into the rabbit hole of analog synthesis, Tim Walker has carved out an ever-expanding niche for himself across the country by consistently creating a unique and abstract sound pushing the bar of the underground bass scene as we know it. Taking the rawness of modular sounds and fusing it with the swagger of modern-day hip hop, Mindset has created an auditory experience that generates a response unseen until now. With 808's strong enough to make even the most dedicated headbangers lose it, and ethereal synths sweet enough to make you cry, Mindset has truly created something that is redefining the bass music scene in a time where refreshing artists like himself come few and far between.

Tyler John Kraehling and Earl Buk

Hailing from the Northeastern states, Tyler John Kraehling has been traveling through the country with eyes open, taking stock of the lives of the people who inhabit it.

Drenched in the tradition of American troubadours, he tells stories that speak to the novelties and banalities of what it means to walk this earth. His clothes and guitar are mostly second-hand; his songs are anything but.

Earl Buck is a singer/songwriter from Taos, New Mexico.

His first EP, recorded alone in covid quarantine in his living room, was released in March of 2022, just as he embarked on a 50 show tour opening for internationally renowned folk singer Joe Purdy. In addition to his songwriting, Buck is a twenty year veteran of the film industry, where he writes screenplays and acts under his stage name Arron Shiver.

In a cultural landscape filled with endless pundits and talking heads, Fran Lebowitz stands out as one of our most insightful social commentators.

Her essays and interviews offer her acerbic views on current events and the media – as well as pet peeves including tourists, baggage-claim areas, after-shave lotion, adults who roller skate, children who speak French, or anyone who is unduly tan.

The New York Times Book Review calls Lebowitz an “important humorist in the classic tradition.” Purveyor of urban cool, Lebowitz is a cultural satirist whom many call the heir to Dorothy Parker.

Connect: Winterscapes

The Santa Fe Women’s Ensemble Presents

“Connect! Winterscapes”

December 8,10,14 and 15, 2024

“Connect!,” the theme of the Santa Fe Women’s Ensemble’s 44 th season, begins with our

exciting December concerts, entitled “Winterscapes.” Whether describing a peaceful mellow

evening in front of a fire or a raucous night of boisterous caroling, this repertory is a collection

of choral music that hits all the notes of this festive season.

This polarity is demonstrated most aptly in the opening piece, “Hodie,” by Joan Szymko.

Using the traditional Latin text, Szymko begins with a graceful, original monophonic chant

that then explodes into a rhythmic exhortation of the text “Gloria.” For those who prefer a

serene winter evening, Jacob Naverud’s “Season of Light” sets the tone for a pleasant night

of remembering. For the listener who wants to be energized, Donald Patriquin’s rollicking

arrangement of “Hey Ho! Nobody Home” will get the blood coursing through their veins. Eight

other songs follow that will delight and warm your hearts. “The pieces we are presenting are

amazing in their diversity and craftsmanship,” describes Music Director Dr. Linda Raney.

King Buffalo

KING BUFFALO
King Buffalo is the trio of vocalist/guitarist Sean McVay, bassist Dan Reynolds, and drummer Scott Donaldson. Since forming in 2013, the self-proclaimed "heavy psych" band has made its name via 4 Full-lengths, 4EPs, and tours with Clutch, Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats, All Them Witches, The Sword, and Elder.

King Buffalo will issue their fifth full-length, Regenerator, on Sept. 2, 2022, as a self-release in North America and through Stickman Records in Europe. Preorders will be available on June 10th via http://kingbuffalo.bigcartel.com.

Written and recorded by the band with mixing and engineering by Sean McVay and mastering by Bernie Matthews, the seven-song outing is the third in King Buffalo’s stated ‘pandemic trilogy,’ following Two of 2021’s Best Albums in The Burden of Restlessness and Acheron.

Both of those albums – like 2018’s Longing to Be the Mountain, 2016’s debut, Orion, and the various EPs and other offerings they’ve made over the last eight years – made bold declarations about who King Buffalo are as a band, and Regenerator is no different. As McVay, Reynolds and Donaldson continue to explore the outer reaches of modern psychedelic songcraft, melding progressive rhythms, drifting atmospheres and accompanying surges of electricity, the new collection only further establishes them as one of the brightest lights shining in underground rock today.

As the third of three, Regenerator seems inherently to tie together the two LPs most immediately before it, and as King Buffalo unfold the leadoff title-track across nine and half minutes, it becomes clear just how truly they have marked out their own sonic presence. The later melodic highlight “Mammoth” – with McVay’s most confident vocal yet – shimmers with hope that somehow doesn’t come across as desperate, and as “Hours” engages classic space rock and the closing “Firmament” summarizes the first, second and third series installments, the final chapter of this trilogy becomes the essential cornerstone of King Buffalo’s work to-date.

The band returned to live activity late last year, touring alongside Clutch and more recently a full North American spring tour with Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats. By the time Regenerator arrives, they will have completed a UK and European headlining tour with festival appearances in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Portugal, Belgium and Denmark.

RICKSHAW BILLIE'S BURGER PATROL
“Our catalog has never been short on big dumb riffs, but the idea on this record was to really turn the screw,” says RBBP bassist Aaron Metzdorf. On Big Dumb Riffs, that screw is cranked incredibly tight.

“We just wanted ‘the part’: The opening of Pantera’s ‘Primal Concrete Sledge’, the breakdown in Primus’ ‘Pudding Time’ — the shit that makes you move and lose your mind. Just that part the whole time.”

Across 11 concise, taut songs — most clocking in around 2 minutes or less — Rickshaw Billie’s Burger Patrol demonstrates their skillful ability to blend the merciless low end of Leo Lydon’s 8-string guitar, Aaron Metzdorf’s masterful chordwork on the bass, and Sean St.Germain’s driving drumming.

Hot on the heels of their breakout 5th studio release Doom Wop (2023), Rickshaw Billie’s Burger Patrol returns with Big Dumb Riffs: A whole new variant of the fuzzed out, overdriven, melodic, groovy music they have been making since 2016. While Big Dumb Riffs is decidedly more aggressive and rhythmic, it still retains the overtly melodic feel of Doom Wop. But Leo Lydon’s vocals are considerably more angry and negative (song titles like “1-800-EAT-SHIT” and “Body Bag” should be a clue.)

“The whole writing process was, ‘what if we just played two notes the whole song’,” Metzdorf says. “‘What if we tuned down to almost unusable string tension?’, ‘what if we write a record that will make everyone say ‘wow that is dumb’? Leo and I really move around on stage a lot. Being a dingus is crucial to the groove. All these riffs were designed to allow us to act bigger and dumber on stage.”

Big Dumb Riffs will be available for streaming and download on March 22, 2024. LP to follow in late Spring.

The IRIE and the Riddims West Coast Sleigh Ride

The IRIE and the Riddims West Coast Sleigh Ride

The Irie was formed in Chandler, Arizona by George Ruiz in 2012. However, the current incarnation has only been playing together since the end of 2022 and they’re already making waves in their new form.

When drummer of The Irie, Johnny Groove moved back to his hometown of Tempe, AZ from LA he soon linked up with George Ruiz and brother Corey Groove (Previous members of The VeraGroove) . The trio realized they had the right fit together and quickly recorded their first single, ‘Toxic Love’. That was just the beginning.. or... the new beginning.

Their EP, 'Coming Down' was the next natural step to take, rounding out their sound and offering more of those good vibes. Leading up to their 2nd EP “Cant Get Enough” which debuted #1 on the iTunes reggae charts.

The Irie have just released their 3 singles from their upcoming album “Planet Paradise” which features Andy Chaves of Katastro and Nathan Aurora of Iya Terra and was released 06.24.22. The Irie have recently played their biggest show to date at Red Rocks for a sold out show with Sublime with Rome.

The Riddims is a High Desert Reggae band from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Our music is inspired by Roots Reggae, Hip-Hop, Rock, and our native New Mexican music.

These inspirations formed the genre "High Desert Reggae" which is gaining popularity in the Southwestern US. The Riddims consists of 6 members; Myles Chavez, Chris Cruz, Donavon Ortiz, Rick Gonzalez, Tony Gallegos, Kevin Sanchez, and Tony Rinaldi.

A creative mecca where tasty wubs and wild party bangers come to life. His music is like candy for wooks, and fans can’t get enough.

22-year-old, Florida-based Nicholas Olivieri, the mad scientist behind WonkyWilla’s definitive, bass-driven sound, has been building his savory style of club bangers and dizzying sound experiments for anyone with a sweet tooth for wubs, dubs and everything wonky. His intricate soundscapes have been showcased by bass music’s biggest stars including Cannabliss, TVBOO, Ahee, Zingara, A Hundred Drums, Maddy O’Neal, and many more.

Lee Fields & Monophonics

Lee Fields is arguably the greatest soul singer alive today. In an age when the shelf life of an artist largely depends on posturing and trends, he has proven to be an unassailable force of nature.

His prolific, decade-spanning career continues to reign supreme on the modern soul scene. In addition to twenty albums and over forty singles, he has taken the stage at almost every major festival and relevant venue on the planet, including Coachella, Bonnaroo, Newport Folk, Roskilde,

Outside Lands, Rock en Seine, Carnegie Hall, the Olympia in Paris, and the Paradiso in Amsterdam. His body of work continues to garner the attention of pop artists and producers via samples by hip hop heavyweights: J. Cole, Travis Scott, Rick Ross, A$ap Rocky. This October, Lee releases his 21st full-length, Sentimental Fool — a soulful, bluesy return to his rhythm & blues roots.

MONOPHONICS
Monophonics’ signature sound is pure timeless heavy soul with warm textures of psychedelic rock.

This is a band that revels in the past, taking you back to the styles of the late 60s and early 70s, while always keeping its feet positioned in the present, looking ahead to the future.

Front man, vocalist, and keyboardist Kelly Finnigan always leads with power. The renowned rhythm section starts with drummer Austin Bohlman along with Max Ramey on bass and Aquilles Magaña on guitar.

A dynamic horn section led by Ryan Scott on Trumpet with Jason Cressey playing Trombone always elevates the show & sound. This group drips in cosmic fashion.

LOTUS- How to dream in color

Lotus, innovators in blending electronic dance music with the jamband model of improvisation, have captivated audiences with their high-energy, dance-inducing shows and intrepid studio work.

Drawing from genres such as psychedelic rock, krautrock, post-rock, disco, and funk, the four-piece band is known for their festival-favorite performances and intriguing songwriting, which seamlessly transitions from high-flying guitar solos to modular synth workouts, combining tightly composed songs with freeranging group improvisation.

Their 11th studio album, "How To Dream In Color," showcases Lotus's evolution, featuring 12 tracks that traverse a spectrum of soundscapes. While primarily instrumental, this album includes vocals—both traditional and electronically manipulated—integrating elements that create distinct atmospheres for each composition.

Highlights include tracks like “How Do I Come Down,” a riveting opener with Radiohead-esque vocals from Gabe Otto, the groovy and unique “Watching the Distant Storm,” and the driving krautrock instrumental “In the Shadow of the Mountain.” The album originated from demos on an old 8-track reel-to-reel tape machine, balancing gritty analog sounds with hi-fi studio production.

The album reflects a dreamlike narrative where incongruities blend into a cohesive whole, incorporating guest vocals, horns, violin, handpan, modular synths, and modern electronic techniques.

Building on their extensive touring experience and diverse production styles, Lotus continues to innovate and inspire. Over the last two decades, the band has toured actively throughout the US working their way up from clubs to world-class venues such as Red Rocks (15 times). They've become festival favorites, playing everything from Bonnaroo to Outside Lands and Electric Forest.

This year, the band celebrates the sixteenth anniversary of their annual festival, Summerdance, in Garrettsville, OH. Much like a live Lotus show, "How To Dream In Color" is a journey, offering a beacon for fans old and new, inviting them to explore the vibrant and infinite realms of Lotus'musical vision.

The Disco Biscuits

The Disco Biscuits

The Disco Biscuits are a band of transformation and invention. The Philadelphia-based group remains the pioneers of “Trance-Fusion” - bridging the gap between electronic dance music and jam rock - while consistently looking for new sonic boundaries to break and avenues to tell stories within.

With two rock operas (1998’s Hot Air Balloon / 2000’s Chemical Warfare Brigade) amongst the 8 full-length studio albums under their belt, The Biscuits are back with their 9th studio record, a space opera entitled “Revolution in Motion,” to be released on March 29th, 2024.

Released in 4 parts and accompanied by comic book-style 3D-animated films, Revolution in Motion tells of an alien species set out to discover and study other life throughout the universe. After partying a little too hard and losing track of their mission, the aliens slip through space in a wormhole, arriving at none other than our planet Earth. Vowing to complete their mission, the aliens set out to abduct and study humans with only The Disco Biscuits able to save their own world, and possibly the alien’s world as well.

With a vast touring schedule and ever-changing live shows, The Disco Biscuits’ soul belongs as much to marathon dance parties as it does to live improvisational journeys. They employ emerging technologies to help them create music that is 100% human although, perhaps, not entirely of this planet.

Big Richard - Girl Dinner Tour

Big Richard - Girl Dinner Tour

The world-class musicians in Big Richard initially convened in 2021 for a festival date.

The quartet showed up to the one-off like it had been together for years and quickly graduated to club shows and dates. The musicians siphon from bluegrass, old time, classical, country, and pop. Bursting with jaw-dropping virtuosity; playfully irreverent stage banter; stunning four-part harmony; imaginative arrangements; a refreshingly eclectic repertoire; and a healthy dose of lady rage, Big Richard is poised to penetrate the Americana music world and beyond.

To date, the quartet has issued 3 singles, the Live from Telluride album, and it has new music on the way.

MOUNT EERIE
Phil Elverum, b. 1978

I grew up five miles into the woods outside the island town of Anacortes, Washington during the 80's and 90's in a post-hippie echo that normalized saying "hello" out loud to the nearby mountains, waters and animals. As a teenager, entering the world of music and creation through the door that punk tore open, I finally found my people in Olympia.

I lived there for 5 years and released records as the Microphones with the K label. Now I make Mount Eerie records, since 2003, and release them myself on a fake record label, stubbornly still DIY to the bone. I have a devotion to this life of creativity and subversion that has never wavered. These songs and works dig down into the bedrock of this place and try to bring forth a fresh exhale, a big picture glimpse, small beneath the sky, clear water trickling.

Twyla Tharp 60th Anniversary

Twyla Tharp celebrates her 60th anniversary with a coast-to-coast tour featuring her Olivier-nominated “Diabelli Variations,” set to Beethoven’s masterpiece of the same name, and a new dance to a reimagining of Philip Glass’s iconic “Aguas da Amazonia.”
Showcasing Tharp’s uncanny and witty use of music to create work of startling originality and beauty, the two dances once again ensure Tharp’s place as one of the great artists of our time. Don’t miss this groundbreaking evening of stellar dancing and phenomenal musicianship.

The first and only choreographer to take on the intensely demanding and demonically complex “Diabelli Variations,” Tharp makes visible the elegant humor and depth of the composer’s layered genius. With each section of the Beethoven piece, unique in mood and texture, Tharp’s response—tender, teasing, transcendent, cheeky—commands all of its performers’ technical prowess—and energy—as they change effortlessly from ballet to jazz, to modern, with unexpected bits of social and street dance for good measure.
Almost two centuries later in years and spirit is Philip Glass’s “Aguas da Amazonia,” arranged and recorded by members of Third Coast Percussion in close collaboration with Tharp and performed on a unique collection of custom-designed percussion instruments.
This groundbreaking evening is not one to be missed and is sure to dazzle audiences with its stellar dancing and phenomenal musicianship.

Graham Nash will be joined on stage by Todd Caldwell (keyboards and vocals), Adam Minkoff (bass, drums, guitars, and vocals), and Zach Djanikian (guitars, mandolin, drums, and vocals), performing favorites from across his sixty-year career.

GRAHAM NASH
Legendary artist Graham Nash, a founding member of both the Hollies and Crosby, Stills and Nash, is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee. He has seen rock history unfold at some of its seminal moments – from the launch of the British Invasion to the birth of the Laurel Canyon movement a year later. An extraordinary Grammy Award-winning renaissance artist – and self-described “simple man” – Nash was inducted twice into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, for his work with CSN and his work as a solo artist.

Towering above virtually everything that Graham Nash has accomplished in his long and multi-faceted career, stands the litany of songs that he has written and introduced to the soundtrack of our lives for nearly six decades.

Nash’s remarkable body of work began with his contributions to the Hollies opus from 1964 to ’68, including “Stop Stop Stop,” and “On A Carousel,” among others.

The classic union of Crosby, Stills & Nash (& Young) yielded songs that are lightning rods embedded in our DNA, starting with Nash’s “Marrakesh Express,” “Pre-Road Downs” and “Lady of the Island,” from the first Crosby, Stills & Nash LP and his iconic “Teach Your Children” and “Our House” from CSNY’s Déjà Vu.

Nash’s career as a solo artist took flight in 1971, beginning with two landmark albums, Songs For Beginners and Wild Tales which further showcased the depths of his abilities as a singer and songwriter, yielding such favorites as “Chicago/We Can Change the World” and “Military Madness”. His latest effort, "Now", was released worldwide in May 2023.

An Evening with Yo Yo Ma

Yo-Yo Ma shares some of the music that has helped him understand life and reflects on how it has shaped his thinking about human nature, art, and our search for meaning. This special evening of music and words asks us to consider what music is for, and how it can guide us on a path towards hope.

Yo-Yo Ma’s multi-faceted career is a testament to his belief in culture’s power to generate trust and understanding. Whether performing new or familiar works for cello, bringing communities together to explore culture’s role in society, or engaging unexpected musical forms, Yo-Yo strives to foster connections that stimulate the imagination and reinforce our humanity.

Most recently, Yo-Yo began Our Common Nature, a cultural journey to celebrate the ways that nature can reunite us in pursuit of a shared future. Our Common Nature follows the Bach Project, a 36-community, six-continent tour of J. S. Bach’s cello suites paired with local cultural programming. Both endeavors reflect Yo-Yo’s lifelong commitment to stretching the boundaries of genre and tradition to understand how music helps us to imagine and build a stronger society.

Yo-Yo Ma was born in 1955 to Chinese parents living in Paris, where he began studying the cello with his father at age four. When he was seven, he moved with his family to New York City, where he continued his cello studies before pursuing a liberal arts education.

Yo-Yo has recorded more than 120 albums, is the winner of 19 Grammy Awards, and has performed for nine American presidents, most recently on the occasion of President Biden’s inauguration. He has received numerous awards, including the National Medal of the Arts, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Birgit Nilsson Prize. He has been a UN Messenger of Peace since 2006, and was recognized as one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2020.

La Bohéme

In the vibrant playground of 1920s Paris, six Bohemians come together in pursuit of connection, meaning and artistic greatness. Set in this golden age of artistic revolution, Puccini’s timeless tale of love, longing and sacrifice resonates anew.

Music By: Giacomo Puccini

Libretto By: Luigi Illica and ‎Giuseppe Giacosa

Sung In: Italian

Instant Translation Screen: English and Spanish

Run Time: Approximately 2 hours 20 min; includes a 25-minute intermission

SYNOPSIS
ACT I

Montparnasse. The poet Rodolfo and the painter Marcello are struggling to keep warm in their attic apartment on Christmas Eve. Rodolfo sacrifices his latest manuscript to the stove. The philosopher Colline enters and they watch the play burn. In comes the musician Schaunard with food, fuel and wine. As the young men celebrate their sudden good fortune, Benoît the landlord enters to collect the rent. They get him drunk and ply him with questions about women, then shove him out, feigning indignation at his supposed immorality. Marcello, Colline and Schaunard set out for the Café Momus, leaving Rodolfo alone to finish an article. He hears a timid knock: it is a pretty neighbor whose candle has gone out on the stairs. She suddenly feels faint, and he revives her with a little wine and relights her candle. She realizes she has lost her key, and as they both bend down to look for it, he finds it and slips it into his pocket. Their hands meet under the table, hers icy cold. He asks her name. She is called Mimì, and she lives alone in a garret where she embroiders flowers. The two are instantly and madly enamored and leave for the Café Momus to join Rodolfo’s friends.

ACT II

The Latin Quarter. Everyone is in the street–selling, shopping, dining, celebrating. Rodolfo buys Mimì a lovely gift and they join the others at a table at the Café Momus to order supper. Parpignol the toy-vendor passes by with jubilant children in his wake. A commotion accompanies the entrance of the spectacular Musetta, once Marcello’s lover, upon the arm of the aged and wealthy Alcindoro. Musetta sings a chic waltz–a hymn to her own appeal–then makes a scene over a too-tight shoe. She sends Alcindoro off with it to the cobbler’s and falls into Marcello’s arms. The military band passes by, and the friends follow the soldiers, leaving Alcindoro to pay the bill when he returns.

ACT III

A gate to the city. A cold dawn breaks as milk women, scavengers, farmers, and truckmen wait to be admitted. Mimì arrives and sends a message to Marcello to come out of the warm, lively tavern to talk to her. She explains that Rodolfo is so jealous that she fears they must part. Rodolfo comes out of the tavern in search of Marcello, and Mimì hides. Rodolfo tells Marcello that he wants to separate from Mimì because of her flirtatiousness. Marcello doesn’t believe him, and Rodolfo confesses his real fear that their poverty aggravates her declining health. Mimì weeps and coughs violently, revealing her presence. Rodolfo rushes to her. They gently decide to part. Marcello hears Musetta’s laughter from the tavern and soon re-emerges with her in the heat of a quarrel over her flirtatiousness. While they hurl epithets, Mimì and Rodolfo postpone their parting until the spring.

ACT IV

Montparnasse. Back in the attic, Rodolfo longs for Mimì, of whom he has had no news, and Marcello pines for Musetta, who is with a wealthy patron. Colline and Schaunard bring a little food, and the friends seek to lift their spirits with a frolic, which turns into a mock duel. In the midst of the fun Musetta bursts in, saying she has met Mimì in the street. The girl is desperately ill and wants only to be brought up to Rodolfo. Rodolfo brings Mimì in and holds her icy hands. They have nothing to give her. Musetta takes off her earrings and gives them to Marcello to sell. Colline goes to pawn his coat. Musetta runs off to get a muff for Mimì’s hands. Left alone, Mimì and Rodolfo relive and proclaim their love. Musetta and the others return, bustling, Musetta praying, but it is too late. While they prepare medicine for her, she slips away. As the others stand dazed, Rodolfo collapses upon her: “Mimì! Mimì!”

The Marriage of Figaro

Love, loyalty and lies can be a tricky trio. In Mozart’s hands, they’re perfectly wound into a comedy brimming with mistaken identities, youthful yearning and hilarious antics. Will Figaro keep his wife’s heart safe from the Count’s amorous advances?

Music By: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Libretto By: Lorenzo Da Ponte

Sung in: Italian

Instant Translation Screen: English and Spanish

Run Time: Approximately 3 hours 27 minutes; includes a 25-minute intermission

ACT I

Morning. On the morning of his wedding, Figaro is trying out the space for the marital bed while his fiancée Susanna is trying on the bridal hat she’s made. He praises Count Almaviva’s generosity in moving them to this room as their first shared dwelling as man and wife. She is less than impressed by a “generosity” that moves their employer closer to reclaiming his jus primae noctis (feudal privilege of the lord to spend the wedding night with any bride who is a vassal on his lands). She runs to attend to the Countess, and Figaro resolves to foil the Count’s lascivious plan.

Marcellina has her own plans for Figaro’s wedding. Figaro has borrowed a large sum from her which he guaranteed against his own hand in marriage, she enlists Bartolo’s help. Knowing the Count is pursuing Susanna, she calculates that if the servant can deny the master, Almaviva will punish his wife’s maid by denying the wedding. Bartolo enjoys the idea of revenge on the valet of the man who ruined his own wedding plans (to Rosina, now Countess Almaviva) years ago. Susanna enters and she and Marcellina exchange too many compliments for either to proceed in the direction in which she was headed.

Cherubino the page intercepts Susanna and begs her to intercede for him with his godmother the Countess, that she may plead for him to the Count, who caught him the day before alone with tweenaged Barbarina and tried to throw him off the estate. The arrival of the Count interrupts their conversation, and Cherubino hides behind an armchair. Thus he accidentally overhears the Count’s gallantries toward Susanna — which are cut off by the arrival of Basilio, who’s come to confide Cherubino’s indiscretions toward the Countess. The Count hides behind the same chair and fumes. When his jealous pride can take no more, he bursts forth, only to discover he’s been hiding back-to-back with the page himself. A chorus of peasants, directed by Figaro, enters singing praise to the Count for having abolished the jus primae noctis. Desperate to be spared further embarrassment, Almaviva makes an excuse to hold the wedding that evening. Desperate to be rid of the pest, he orders Cherubino to report for duty as an officer of his regiment in Seville.

ACT II

Mid-day. The Countess, alone in her apartments, longs for the love she and her husband once enjoyed. Susanna comes to tell her of the Count’s unwanted attentions. Figaro joins them and presents his plan to trap the master: Figaro has sent him an unsigned note, by way of Basilio, revealing an assignation between the Countess and an admirer, fixed for that evening in the garden. He advises Susanna to pretend to accept the Count’s invitation to a tryst — and to send Cherubino (who has yet to leave for the army) in her clothes, in her place. The ladies, delighted, lock the door and commence costuming; but the arrival of the Count interrupts them and the panicked Countess hides Cherubino in the dressing-room. The Count shows his lady the mysterious note, hears a sudden sound, sees the Countess’s unease, tries to force the door, is dissuaded, demands the she escort him to fetch the necessary tools to open the closet … while Susanna slips in to take Cherubino’s place and the unluckily lucky boy leaps out the open window into the hedgerows. Returning, the Count is astonished to see Susanna, and not the hated page, step calmly from the wardrobe. The Countess is vindicated and the Count begs her pardon — though not before chastising her for such a cruel joke. Figaro enters to say the ceremony is prepared and awaits the celebrant. The Count filibusters. The gardener Antonio blusters in having just seen a man jump from above and hit the ground running. Figaro covers for the page, hopping to identify himself as the jumper. Then Marcellina and Bartolo bring their grievance and its attendant documentation, demanding the Count settle the score and marry Marcellina and Figaro.

ACT III

Afternoon. Almaviva considers the recent events. Susanna pops in for a flask of smelling salts for her mistress and, to his surprise, stays to make a date. Overhearing her whispering to Figaro on her way out, he realizes he’s the victim of a trick, and swears revenge. Meanwhile, Barbarina takes a nervous Cherubino back to her house to disguise him. An anxious Countess waits for Susanna to plan their own disguise: she herself, and not Cherubino, will meet the Count in Susanna’s clothes.

Don Curzio brings Marcellina’s case before the Count, demanding that Figaro pay up. But seeing the unusual tattoo on his arm, she and Bartolo recognize him as the fruit of their long-ago love. Not his bride and her defender, then, but his mother and father … everyone is overjoyed! Everyone except the Count, who now, with Figaro’s debt forgiven and the additional wedding of Marcellina and Bartolo to celebrate, must rethink his own plans.

The Count is sure Cherubino has left for Seville, but Antonio enters insisting that the boy is still on the grounds. Improvising on Figaro’s strategy, the Countess dictates a note to Susanna inviting the Count to the garden that evening. They seal it with a pin, to be “returned to sender.” A chorus arrives, containing one conspicuously awkward bridesmaid, and sings to the Countess, as Susanna kneels before the lord of the manor and slips him the note, on which he pricks his finger. The Countess recognizes Cherubino, and the Count soon does too. At the boiling point, he is outwitted by Barbarina, who asks to have the page for her husband.

ACT IV

Evening. Barbarina has been outwitted by the pin that pricked the Count. Figaro and Marcellina find her looking frantically for it, and she tells them the Count expects her to return it to Susanna. His suspicions fully kindled, Figaro turns to his mother, who reminds him that all the strategic strata are surely not yet known — and who, when he storms away “to avenge all husbands,” hastens to inform her former rival, now daughter-to-be, Susanna. Barbarina hides in the pavilion. Susanna and the Countess trade cloaks in the cooling air, and the Countess hides in the pavilion. Susanna, warned by Marcellina that Figaro is hiding in the dark, revels for a delicious instant in the knowledge that he’s listening. Cherubino enters in search of Barbarina, and finding “Susanna,” tries to seduce her — until the Count arrives for his own assignation and throws the lad out. While he attends in earnest to “Susanna,” the woman he thinks he’s found is found out by her own husband. Figaro has recognized Susanna’s voice, and he joins the joke by playing a grand love scene with his “Countess” for an audience of Almaviva. The Count’s jealousy explodes. While he is shouting down his servants’ cries for mercy, the Countess steps out to reveal herself. The Count is thunderstruck. He begs her forgiveness. The couples are reunited, and this mad day rolls to a close.

Top House with Wheelwright

Top House with Wheelwright

Fast-paced, high-energy foot stompers. Ballads that'll make you cry. It's kind of like a rock band married old-fashioned bluegrass and had a little baby. And named it TopHouse.

TopHouse was created in 2015 by two Montana music majors, guitarist/songwriter Jesse Davis and violinist William Cook, before adding Joseph Larson (lead singer and guitar/banjo player,) and Andy LaFave (piano) in 2017 and 2022, respectively. After being vaulted to local fame in their birthplace of Missoula, with the Missoulian naming TopHouse one of the top 5 best new bands (two years in a row we might add), the band moved to Nashville, TN in October of 2019. TopHouse quickly set to work attaining a local residency as well as getting music played on Nashville's premier new-music radio station, Lightning 100. With some viral social media moments, a healthy dose of touring, consistent time in the studio, and a diet of Little Caesar's and Red Bull, TopHouse has continued to grow to the point of selling out venues in cities they've never even heard of. When they aren't touring the U.S. they can be found around Nashville, trying not to die in traffic and/or throwing the occasional round of disc golf.

Wheelwright brings a southwestern sound of pop and grunge from the sprawling desert city of Phoenix, AZ. None of his songs are idealistic. No light without darkness, no laughter without at least some suffering, no thoughtfulness without some recklessness. With devil may care spirit, and a message of hope, frustration, and love, Wheelwright's music contrasts between worlds of wandering existentialism, the strife of modern relationships, and the shreds of hope that can be found in darkest and most broken places of ourselves. Songs of acceptance, hard luck, and love without all the Kumbaya bullshit, but rather the idea that we are all beautiful and flawed, stuck here together, whether we like it or not. In his words, "Everybody has things about themselves that they don't like, they have things that they would change about themselves, but they also have spirits, and hopes, and dreams and light inside of them despite the darkness that seems to hang over us as we march into the uncertainty of what's next."

Zoe Keating
Nov

Zoe Keating

Composer and performer Zoë Keating has spent the last 20 years exploring the landscape of sounds a string instrument can make. She coaxes sounds out of the very edges of her cello, adeptly layering them into “swoon inducing” (San Francisco Weekly) music that is unclassifiable yet “a distinctive mix of old and new” (National Public Radio). She is known for her use of technology - which she uses to record and sample her cello onstage and in the studio - and for her DIY approach - composing, recording and producing her works without the help of a record label.

Born in Canada, Keating started playing the cello when she was eight and went on to pursue electronic music and contemporary composition as part of her Liberal Arts studies at Sarah Lawrence College. After graduation she moved to San Francisco and built a career as an information architect and data analyst while moonlighting as a cellist in rock bands. Keating eventually combined her love of music and technology, using a computer to live-layer her cello and performing for late-night parties in the San Francisco warehouse in which she lived.

Keating’s recorded works have achieved a surprising degree of popular ubiquity for a DIY artist. Her self-produced albums have several times reached #1 on the iTunes classical charts and spent many months on the Billboard classical charts. Her recordings are used as bumper music for NPR’s Morning Edition, as the theme music to OnBeing, as the thinking- music of the Sherlock Holmes character on CBS Elementary, in HBO's hit drama White Lotus, in countless documentaries and in tens of thousands of online videos of everything from professional and amateur dance performances to rock climbing and gaming videos.

Keating also composes for TV, theater, film and dance. She co-composed, along with Jeff Russo, the score for the HBO movie “Oslo”, which earned them an Emmy Nomination in 2021 for Outstanding Music for a Television Movie. Her latest projects include scores for PBS's 2022 series "Searching: Our Quest for Meaning in the Age of Science" and the drama "For The Love of a Woman", by Italian director Guido Chiesa, scheduled for release in 2024.

In addition to her recordings, Keating performs to rapt audiences around the world. Each performance is unique as she spontaneously improvises around her pieces, demonstrates how she makes them and tells the stories behind them.

A vocal advocate for the rights of artists and creators, Keating writes and speaks often about copyright and the mechanics of the music industry economy. She was elected a governor of the San Francisco chapter of the Recording Academy, named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and served as a boardmember of CASH Music, a nonprofit organization that built open source digital tools for musicians and labels.

As a cellist Zoë has played with a wide range of artists, including Imogen Heap, Amanda Palmer, Guy Sigsworth, Tears for Fears, DJ Shadow, Dan Hicks, Thomas Dolby, Sean Ono Lennon, John Vanderslice, Rasputina, Pomplamoose and Paolo Nutini.
Zoë currently lives in Burlington, VT and is working on another album for release in 2024.

"...a distinctive mix of old and new -- layers of sound, that feel more like orchestrations than a solo instrument. " - National Public Radio

"Swoon-inducing. Like taking a triple-shot of Absinthe before stepping outside of the bar just in time to see the sun exploding." -SF Weekly

"… uses live looping to transform solo performances into multipart masterpieces." - Electronic Musician

"…sublime minimalist music with a pop sensibility" - San Francisco Weekly

Jeffery Martin

Jeffery Martin

On a small corner lot in southeast Portland, Oregon, Jeffrey Martin holed up through the winter recording his quietly potent new album Thank God We Left The Garden. Long nights bled into mornings in the tiny shack he built in the backyard, eight feet by ten feet. What began as demos meant for a later visit to a proper studio became the album itself, spare and intimate and true. Recorded live and alone around two microphones, Jeffrey often held his breath to wait for the low diesel hum of a truck to pass one block over on the busy thoroughfare. During the coldest nights, he timed recording between the clicks of the oil coil heater cycling on and off.

Martin's fourth full length album, Thank God We Left The Garden comes out on Portland's beloved Fluff and Gravy Records Nov __. He produced and engineered it himself, recalling, "There was a magic quality to the sounds I was getting in the shack with these two cheap microphones, some lucky recipe of time and place that allowed my voice and the way I play guitar and the shape of these new songs to come together with the kind of honesty I was craving."

So much has happened in the world since the release of his previous album One Go Around (heralded by No Depression as 'the poetry of America'), and Jeffrey has filled the time doggedly, but happily, touring the US and Europe, watching it all unfold in a stream of small town conversations and city sprawl. In a moment where depth is so often traded for the instantaneous, where tech billionaires are building rockets to escape the planet, where the dead-eyed stare of artificial intelligence is promising to existentially upend our world, and where divisiveness in our culture is breeding delusional levels of certainty, Jeffrey Martin's new record feels like a hopeful and fully human antidote.

There are holes in all the side walls where the wind it brings the rain in
And the gold crowns have been found out to be brass that has been painted
There are holes in all our bibles where we make secret compartments
To hide the broken treasures we smuggled out of the garden -Quiet Man

The sounds feel warm, close, and refreshingly real, all held up by the richness and rare candor of Jeffrey's voice. Production is restrained mostly to his guitar and vocals, with flashes of classical guitar for a tumbling wash of melody and low end color. Martin's voice sits high above everything, reaching into new melodic territory that goes beyond his earlier work. "I feel like I've only just learned how to sing," Martin said. "Like I've been chasing this record since my very first recordings. I wanted to really see what I could do, just my guitar and my voice and little else. I don't think it was conscious. I think maybe it was a reaction to the pace of life these days. The churning news and entertainment and politics and violence of it all. I needed to know that even in this day and age, just a few simple ingredients still hold up.

Beloved Portland-based guitarist Jon Neufeld added electric guitar to three tracks. Sticking to the same less-is more approach, his playing skillfully and subtly elevates the lyrical intention. Neufeld's touch is best displayed on Red Station Wagon, a searing story about one man's transformation from a narrow-minded bigot into a person who feels deep remorse for the ugliness of his youth. In his transformation he discovers the clarity of empathy and compassion. The devastating and redemptive four minute song contains the emotional arch of an entire film, and each turn is beautifully punctuated by Neufeld's guitar. In addition to his guitar work, Neufeld mixed and mastered the album, and was such a crucial part of the final feel of the record that Martin also credited him as a producer.

"Jon and I really produced this album together," he said. "Me in the shack, and then him in his studio working with what I brought him as he mixed and mastered. It was such a treat to work with him. I brought this pile of rough songs and he was able to dial it in and make up for my complete lack of recording know-how. I love the performances I got, but Jon's magic is what helped them breathe and truly come to life."

No less lyrically weighty than his previous work, Thank God We Left The Garden holds a new kindness and easy solace that feels timeless and full of generosity. The title is a paradoxical nod to Martin's own spiritual conclusions, a theme that is subtly woven throughout the album. The son of a pastor, he touches on his religious upbringing then carries us well beyond his past where the weight of his deepest questions are free to unfold.

"It's always bothered me how uptight religion gets around the messiness of our human natures, always trying to tell people they're broken and flawed from the get go. The only God I can imagine is one who is overjoyed with the mess. Who revels in the edgeless mystery. I imagine hanging around with angels all day gets boring pretty fast. So maybe we got the story wrong. Maybe we were supposed to leave the Garden all along. Maybe that was the first good thing we ever did. After all, I can't think of anything that has an ounce of meaning or dimension that doesn't come from failure."

This is an album that craves your full attention, best experienced as a whole. Each song further illuminates the scene until you find yourself resting in the strangely comforting tangle of aliveness and meaning (and full spectrum of being alive./what it means to be alive.). At its core Thank God We Left The Garden is an album made of questions, humble and nuanced, a reverent celebration of the asking.

In my mind there's a garden, full of beauty and darkness
Full of sorrow and sweet things where my heart can be honest
In that garden there's a fruit tree and I eat from it daily
The same that Adam and Eve ate / what does that make me? -Garden

Whether singing about his own internal landscape, telling a story of someone else's, or reflecting on the elusive relationship between scarcity and contentment, Martin's writing never pushes the listener away, never points a finger. He sings of things we can all pin a memory on, holding the rough shorn gem of human experience up to the light.

There's a treasure that we all know but we can't have it / It's a place beyond the measure of our minds
It is where we go when we forget we're living / It is where we go when we forget we die . . .
And all the tools we use to feel important / they are useless as a sailboat in the sky
Where old bones and heart aches are forgotten / It's a place we don't have words to describe
The sun will rise like it always does on the day that I die
The world will spin, the sun will go on burning
Never even knowing I was alive

-There Is A Treasure

Thank God We Left the Garden will be released on Fluff and Gravy Records in the fall of 2023. Subsequent touring will carry Jeffrey Martin through all of the US, Canada, and Europe.

Cebollas

A hilarious new road-trip comedy comes from the writer of LA LLUVIA (SFP’s New Play Reading Series), and Prima’s Guide to Funerals (Creede Rep). Three Latina sisters travel from Albuquerque to Denver, not for business or pleasure, but to deliver a dead body. What could possibly go wrong as they make stops in Bernalillo, Santa Fe, Huerfano, Colorado Springs, and Castle Rock along the way? CEBOLLAS received its world premiere at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts in January 2024.
