As Earth’s ecosystems change in response to climate change and other human impacts, species and communities are being rapidly reorganized across the landscape. Adapting to future conditions may involve focusing on resilience rather than strict restoration to historical conditions. We explore what this might look like, and what the implications are for nature conservation.

Don Falk is a Professor in the School of Natural Resources and the Environment at the University of Arizona, with joint appointments in the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research and the Arizona Institutes for Resilience
